That is because he is someone who values his own morals and wants to treat everyone equally. This is juxtaposed by our ML Shi Ying who chooses to live a life not bound by his prophecy and never lets his knowledge of Zhu Yan being his cursed lady affect how he interacts with her. Should they choose to live in fear of it or choose to live a fulfilling life and accept the natural order of things? We got Da Si Ming and Chong Ming who initially take this prophecy at face value and are so fearful of its outcome that it influenced the way they interact with Zhu Yan. TLP challenges its characters' moral compass through the existence of prophecies in their world. The huge prophecy that drives the main character conflict is that Zhu Yan is the cursed lady who will be the one to end Shi Ying's life. Prophecies are merely used as the backdrop to the story's core messages about how humans approach their circumstances pessimistically or optimistically and only one side is made the clear winner by the end of the drama. If I could rephrase it in another way: the key takeaway from TLP is that situations should be viewed from all angles. Within the context of their world there is more than meets the eye when it comes to their cursed prophecies and this is going to be a recurring story element. TLP's approach to one's fate is that it is not something that can be avoided, but it is up to the individual to either take it at face value or find other meanings behind it. WHAT'S IMPORTANT to note is that the show did not mean it in a literal sense like actually preventing their predestined fate from happening. One of TLP's Major Themes is that humans can change their own fate through their own effort. I'll do my best to answer any questions as well if you have any because this drama has been living in my head rent free since its finale dropped and I discover new things about it everyday. I'm gonna try my best to summarize my interpretation of the ending and if there are things that are still unclear you can always refer to the Google doc link because I go into ALOT more detail in there. TL dr TLP is actually a Xianxia drama containing romance that requires alot more thinking and analyzing in order to fully understand its ending and underlying themes. It also doesn't help that 2 episodes were released per day without any breaks so there wasn't really much time to let the story or character actions sink in properly. The plot is actually pretty straightforward when you go back and rewatch episodes. And by that I mean focusing too much on the romance aspect might make people (like me on my first watch) miss the underlying themes and messages of the story. After looking back at the drama retrospectively I came to the conclusion that TLP was really not meant to be viewed as the typical Xianxia romance story. Trust me I was also blindsided at first but then I learned over the past two weeks since I finished the drama that the open ending was most likely intentional because it was in line with its themes and messages. So like the title says I'm going to explain why The Longest Promise ending makes sense despite the controversial open ending it went with. It's still going to be a very long read but that's because there's just too much to cover in this drama. RIP my attempt to explain this drama in bulletpoints though. I wasn't sure if I was gonna post this or not because I had to somehow condense my 11k Google doc into a shorter summary for easier reading. In another reddit post's replies I linked my 28 page analysis of TLP's themes and ending and was encouraged to make a separate post about it so here it is.
